Peter & The Wolf in Utah, 12/11/06

I've only seen Red Hunter (aka Peter & The Wolf) perform a handful of times, but that shouldn't take away from the fact that Monday's show was the best I've ever seen. Got shut out by two different clubs trying to get this one set up, but it ended up working out perfectly; it was intimate enough for him to play as loud or soft as he wanted (and he aimed for soft most of the time). He even played the piano on "Silent Movies", a special treat considering it's one of my all-time favorites songs of his. And an encore on a Japanese bow of some sort. After sets by Joel Taylor and Loralee (whose house we ended up booking for the event), he drove in directly from Denver and played to a packed house of about 50-60 appreciative kids. Bad roads meant it took him about 10 hours to get there but, after sucking back about half of his fifth of tequila, he was calmed and readied. And even giggling, sometimes. Some of these photos help capture the intimacy of the evening (taken by my friend Josh), but you just had to have been there. It was a beautiful, beautiful evening, one of those that feels like a warm hug. I even made cookies. Chocolate chocolate chip ones. Because, hey, how many times can you make cookies for people as well as bring them the good music?

Nah. If you'd read the words above the pics, you'd have learned that it was my friend Josh who did so. He likes to take the pictures. Then again, he has a very nice camera, so it makes sense.

beautiful photographs. sounds like a lovely and intimate show. thanks for sharing them. i've only seen red perform once with dana falconberry (their harmonies a gorgeous) but his set was way too short. i really must see him play again just so i can hear "safe travels" and "lightness".
