Polka Kind O' Love

If someone wrote a song about you, would you consider it a compliment? I suppose most songs are written about somebody, but there’s usually some a certain kind of anonymity attached to that, I think. Unless you’re on the inner track, you don’t ever really know who a song is about, even if they use a first name as a song title (“Sara’s Song” – G. Love & Special Sauce, “Sara Smile” – Hall & Oates, “Sara” – Starship).

When my friend Rebecca Cenigz said she was going to write a song about a night of polka dancing we took part in, I was really pretty pleased with that notion. Even though her songs generally trash the guys she goes out with, I was pretty certain I’d been on my best behavior that night. I hadn’t even stepped on her feet all that much. I just gave her one pretty stern advisory – not to put my name in it. I mean, c’mon, that’s embarrassing. Besides, it’s not like I have a name like “Dave” or “Mike”. It sorta stands out. If I hear my name anywhere, chances are very good they’re referring to either me or my brother-in-law (yeah, long story there).

The first time I heard the tune was at a small concert I set up at my clubhouse, sometime last summer (or was it the one before that?). She was slated to go first. When she unveiled “Polka Kind O’ Love”, though, she lost my trust. As in she said my entire name in the first verse. It was an uncomfortable feeling. I’d never wished so much that I was an ostrich, so’s I could put my head in a hole rather than endure the stares back in my direction.

I’m fairly removed from that time and situation, so I can now easily share the song with the rest of you. Besides, she just barely sent it to me yesterday afternoon. She wanted to learn how to play the accordion before attempting to record it. Even borrowed my old accordion teacher to go about that task. She polkas better’n me now. True story.

Anyway, here it is.

Sometimes nice. I like that.

I also like all the songs about me. And the poems. Everyone writes about me.

Actually, I think she deserves mucho credit for using "snooty" to rhyme with "Moody".

I mean, seriously.
