A Saturday afternoon conversation.

Mini-family reunion, 9/08.

After the gooey brownies and homemade carrot cake and roasted lamb and salmon were eaten, when the nieces were dumping cups of cold water on one another and the cousins were busy snapping candids of moments to remember later, after all had been properly advised not to bring up religion or politics, lest verbal and/or physical scuffles break out of nowhere, this small exchange took place. It had to do with a beard.

Auntie: "I've finally figured out who it is you remind me of. You look like a lot of the depictions of Christ I have seen."
Nephew: "Well, that's interesting. I mean, that was generally the look I was going for when I grew this thing."
Auntie (continuing): "And it's weird, you know ... I can't quite pin down why it is exactly. It's more than just the beard, I think."
Nephew: "Frankly, I believe it's because Jesus and I are both pretty kind. I'm filled right up with the kindness."
Auntie ... (blank stare)

It's so easy to get these kinds of things out of my mouth without even smiling. I just can't help it.

You've got something of my brother Brent in your eyes, and people have always said he looks like Jesus. I think I know what your Auntie is talking about.

Ah! But I don't smile.

Sad thing is, she's not around you enough to understand your sarcasm. To her, you're just plain pompous. Made me giggle nonetheless.

You were my sole witness to his conversation. Guess you missed her earlier bit about my looking like a prophet from yesteryear?

I should add this bit to the end, actually.

Auntie: "I can never tell whether you're serious or not."
Sister (laughing): "He's NEVER serious!"

What is this referring to self in third person thing here? There must be a good reason - maybe to make it less about you, maybe universalize the conversation, but Ram dunno. Ram somewhat thinks referring to yourself in the third person should be left to the ballplayers and hip hop artists. But Ram still gots love fo' ya - of course.

PS - congrats on fitty k. I think mine is up to 74 visits. Yay-yeah!

Yes, Ram, YES ... you understand my motives here entirely. Universality is key (if that is, in fact, a word).

I can never get over the historical inaccuracy of white Jesus. It is so bizarre.
